Dell XPS 13 9300 Overview

The new XPS 13 for 2020 from Dell comes with the 9300 model moniker. This laptop is an easy recommendation to make for students, business professionals on-the-go and developers as it comes from a really good product line from Dell. These are not super expensive and are being improved upon year after year.

Most people can enjoy this revamped XPS 13 Ultrabook quite readily so let's look at this thing critically for someone who wants to use this as their main computer.

Design and aesthetics: These are incredibly nice-looking machines, they're small, compact and lightweight. The black carbon fibre model has a very unique finish, it's soft to the touch and its durable.

Connectivity: Ports this year include only two USB ports. There's one USB C on the left and one USB C on the right, there's also a headphone jack on the left and an SD card slot/micro SD card slot on the right.

This year the light indicator for the battery is missing. There used to be a button you could press to check on battery life but it is no longer there. I'm not sure that people often relied on that button to check on the battery status of their device so I doubt that it will be missed.

The hinge that connects the screen to the chassis on this 9300 has been improved and can now be opened with one hand.

The 13.4-inch display's aspect ratio is 16 x 10 rather than the traditional 16 x 9 with 2 resolution options. These are 1920 x 1200 pixels on the FHD+ and 3840 x 2400 pixels on the UHD display. This aspect ratio offers a little more vertical space on this bright and colour accurate screen.

The webcam is up top and centre and the 2020 model supports Windows Hello so you can log in to Windows with your face biometrics. If you don't want to use face ID you can use the fingerprint sensor that's at the top of the keyboard. The trackpad uses Windows Precision drivers.

This year the speakers are 2-watt speakers instead of the standard one or 1.5-watt speakers that are normally fitted to slim and light Ultrabook style laptops. We don't think that you will be disappointed by these.

In terms of performance, it's running 10th generation Intel chips which are similar in CPU performance to last years model but with noticeably better graphical performance, although still not great for gaming.

Inside, Intel's Killer Wi-Fi card is on board and the RAM is soldered on and cannot be replaced, so make sure you order the model with sufficient RAM for your needs. The SSD is still replaceable/upgradeable. The battery capacity is 52 watt-hours which offers a comfortable 10 hours on the lower resolution non-touchscreen.

The weight of the XPS 13 9300 comes in at 1.27kg.

Closing this overview with the pricing and the configurations of this new XPS 13. On the Dell UK website, they currently have the cheapest model starting at £1399 which is rocking a 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. In time there will be more options available.

To summarise, we think Dell has done a really good job on this year's XPS 13, with a lot of improvements on this nice looking machine.
